Most schools have 3 main academic sectors – Science, Art and Commercial. The divisions allow students to focus on subjects that align with their career goals and interests. Students across these sectors have an unspoken competition with each other.

Most science students think their subjects require high intelligence because they think they are the smartest group in school. Art students claim deep thinking and creativity are equivalent to solving math equations.

Commercial students showcase their expertise with business knowledge and financial skills for everyday business operations. While not aggressive or overt, the rivalry between school fields exists through subtle interactions – classroom discussions between students and peer reviews and school events. Some healthy competition exists but the divisions create unhealthy biases that complicate relationships unnecessarily.

The competition among Science students and Art students and Commercial students begins because of societal and educational representations of different fields. Science students get the label of being intelligent because they need to study advanced subjects which include Physics and Chemistry and Mathematics. Science gets parental and educational pressure since adults view it as the way to careers in medicine and engineering. Science students have superior status because of their academic choices but other students get no value.

Students who study art face problems because society views their field of study as simple and useless. A lot of people think that Literary subjects with History and Fine Arts deal with material that students can easily understand. According to Art students, their academic requirements to develop creativity and critical thinking skills match the requirements of solving equations and conducting experiments. Community members discount the benefits which art disciplines like music and writing and visual arts bring to society.

Every student in commercial subjects has unique academic struggles. People think that workers in their industry only use basic financial skills. Science and Art students have misconceptions that Business Studies and Accounting with Economics are less challenging than scientific formulas and literary analysis. Business management with financial administration and economic comprehension requires both skill and intelligence according to Commercial students.

The Impact of the Rivalry on Students, Does It End Well?

The academic competition among groups creates both good and bad effects in students. The competitive environment pushes students to work hard to prove themselves. Each group wants to achieve the highest standards in their own field which produces better academic results and creations.

The problems that arise from this situation is more alarming. The development of stereotypes is one of the major problems in this situation. Science students create negative perceptions of Art and Commercial students by saying their subjects are easy. Art students feel unperceived and misinterpreted by others. Commercial students have problems with how others view them as money-oriented instead of intellectually engaged.

School subject divisions create negative impact on students’ confidence. Social norms force students to choose Science when their interests are actually in Art or Commerce. The continuous comparison of students between different fields of study makes others question their abilities and potential. The resulting social pressure usually turns into school-related stress which drains students’ confidence and motivation.

How to Break Out of These Stereotypes

Building a great educational environment requires removing stereotypes and student-to-student respect building activities. Improvement of the learning environment can start by emphasis on each academic subject. Each subject needs to be taught as valuable and important to students. Science students need to understand that the world would be culturally and creatively and entertainmentally stagnant if Art didn’t exist. Art education students should understand how Science drives technological advancements and medical breakthroughs and supports innovative practices. Business students of commerce need to earn proper appreciation for their skills in economic development and financial management.

Fighting stereotypes requires people from all walks of life to work together. Schools should implement team building activities which unites science and art and commerce department students. When building a sustainable business students from different departments work on different projects such as eco-materials research for Science students while Art students do branding and marketing and Commercial students do financial planning. When students work together they realize the unique skills within each field and understand the obstacles and value within each academic discipline.

Encouraging Respect and Teamwork

Schools should implement programs to encourage respect and teamwork which eliminates unhealthy competition. Teachers should help students recognize different skills and not compare negatively. Academic discussions should focus on gaining knowledge through contrasting views rather than showing superiority over other groups.

Students need to show active respect to their peers. Students should appreciate different academic subjects because they serve society in different ways. Science gives medical care while Art contributes to cultural development and Commerce sustains economic activity. All academic specializations are equal in importance so individuals must be accepted without comparison.

Student togetherness activities by schools should be implemented. Students can learn to understand different academic backgrounds through mixed group discussions and career guidance and team building exercise. Through teaming up with their classmates students develop important communication and creativity and problem solving skills which will benefit them later.

Conclusion

Many schools have an underlying competition among Science, Art or Commerce students. Competition between students has its positive effects but these benefits should not lead to division. There’s nothing great about solving complex formulas in Science nor is less intelligence a trait of Art students who focus on creativity nor do commerce students exist only for money. Each field has its own value and students should appreciate each other.

Busting false beliefs and fostering student teamwork will reduce school feud. The school should create an environment where students appreciate each other’s field while collaborating for a better future ahead. Student exchange should focus on recognizing field wise advantages while students gain common knowledge from each other. Creating such an environment will make more inclusive schools and students will gain team based professional skills.
